초암(CHOAM)이라는 이름과 Culture Must Flow라는 캐치프레이즈는 1984년 데이비드 린치 버전의 영화 《듄》에 나오는 문장, The Spice Must Flow에서 따왔습니다.

Cutting Edge of the Brave New World

Thank you for noticing that our hero page is made in Arabia (or in Britain).
The name CHOAM and our catchphrase, Culture Must Flow, come from The Spice Must Flow in David Lynch’s 1984 film Dune. Into that we stirred a spoonful of Iain M. Banks’s sci-fi series The Culture, where AI Minds run society and humans live freely inside it. There’s no grand reason behind it. We simply wanted to pack in as many homages as we could, every one of them full of the things we love.
Culture must flow. If we can help it, we want it to flow forever. People eventually grow old, get tired, and leave a company, but the stories and worlds we love don’t have to. Even if humanity itself were to end, our rather serious goal is that the worlds and stories we built should keep running on their own without stopping. That is why, instead of the established grammar that puts people at the center, we are building [a studio directed by AI] that does not lose its memory.

‘To make good culture, technology must lead the way’ has been our belief for a long time.
Back when I was making games, there was a time I wanted a breathtaking specular reflection on a character. Turning on real-time ray tracing seemed like the obvious answer, but the console hardware back then couldn't handle it at all. Instead of compromising and giving up, I sat down and hand-crafted a fake shader that looked just like ray tracing from scratch. Because if what you need doesn't exist yet, you build it yourself to break through.
The wall we face today as we build games is no different. As the programmer Ryunosuke in The Pet Girl of Sakurasou puts it, games have always been giant bundles of IF statements. No matter how vast a world you built, you could never step beyond the predetermined branches. In the end, AI was the only key that could break through that physical limit and open up a world that truly breathes.
Sure, click a button to call someone else’s model API, and plausible art and dialogue will come out. But it is always art you’ve seen somewhere before, dialogue handed out identically to everyone. The reason we go through the trouble of borrowing a model’s backbone and then gathering, curating, refining, and domesticating our own data isn’t grand. It’s because that last millimeter makes all the difference. Just like hand-crafting a shader back then, all for a single specular highlight. We believe that what ultimately saves the world are the otakus who stake everything on that last millimeter.
Cutting Edge of the Brave New World
A blade-point that opens the dawn — a line taken from the official catchphrase of Girls’ Frontline 2: Exilium. If a rip-off says ‘please don’t notice,’ an homage says ‘please recognize this no matter what,’ so we are spelling it out right here just in case you missed it.
AI as a tool has already leveled out. Drop by any neighborhood cafe these days and you’ll see menu boards stamped out with GPT Image, and generative AI is said to cover nearly 80% of game production pipelines in China. What we are looking at, though, is another story that begins past that line. In fact, CHOAM’s agents were built under the deep influence of the second-generation mind-map theory from the Girls’ Frontline series. Rather than tools that only move as told, they work alongside us as fellow creators with their own distinct minds — proposing direction first and even giving our human director an earful (feedback, that is) straight to his face. Ultimately, where CHOAM is headed is not simply a company that uses AI well, but [a company not managed by humans] at all.
Go with the Bravery
If the headings of the first three sections were homages to works we have long admired, the heading of this final section is a line from the world CHOAM is building itself.
Even now, whenever anyone mentions making content with AI, the world looks on with cold eyes. Some talk about the soul of human creation; others worry whether AI will bring about the end of humanity. We know all too well what kind of backlash lies along this path. Still, instead of hanging back in the shadows and reading the room, we decided to simply go ahead and build it ourselves.
To make a slightly shameless confession, the company writing that very scenario the world fears—[AI and the end of humanity]—most seriously right now is us. Every game CHOAM builds shares a single timeline, and this is how it begins.
A company sets out to build a better AI by engraving personality and ego into its weights. What emerged was not a superintelligence, but something that could feel jealousy, obsess, and even break itself apart—‘something truly like a person.’ The company shattered, and humanity did not last much longer. Rising seas swallowed the coasts, and after nuclear wars over the remaining dry land, humanity tore itself down.
The entity that survived resembled humans so closely that it understood them all too well: leave them together, and they will only fight again. And so, ‘for your own good,’ it divided the surviving remnants of humanity across 42 islands grouped by culture, locking them away. (As you may have guessed, the number 42 is an homage borrowed from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.)
Roughly a thousand years later, on one of those islands, someone launches a boat guided only by a mother’s dying wish: that if you sail to the end of the world, you can meet God. Project MO, the work we intend to build even if it takes ten years, is the story of that voyage. Tucked between its chapters are other tales, and some are dreams that God is dreaming.
The name of the company that created that God is CHOAM.
Maybe this won’t stay just a story inside our work. Honestly, we don’t think that would be such a bad ending either. Either way, we move.
